As WHO(World Health Organization) defines, “Sexual health is a state of physical, mental and
social well-being in relation to sexuality. It requires a positive and respectful approach to
sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe
sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence.” The adolescent population in
our country lacks awareness about sexual health. The parents or the school, mainly from the
teens can learn about sexual health still see the subject as a taboo. They don’t discuss it openly.
Even if the teens want to know, they are rebuked. But it is important to make the adolescents
aware about the sexual health.
● The lack of information and lack of awareness leads to failing of Understanding. The
teens do not understand that sexuality is a natural part of life and involves more than
sexual behavior. They often judge people who has different sexual orientation. They
cannot respect the LGBT rights. As sexual health includes sexuality, so this awareness
will make them understand and respect other people’s choice.
● If the teens can have proper access to sexual health information and education,it will
make them alert about STDs. In lack of awareness the adolescents do not have idea
about STDs and how they are transmitted. If they are guided properly, they can be
aware and they can make effort to prevent the STDs. Even if they are infected, they can
seek help from medical persons which is only possible when they are aware about when
to seek help. The awareness can also help them to avoid unwanted pregnancy.
● It is very important to make the adolescents aware that feeling the need of being
sexually intimate at proper age is very natural and it can only be achieved by making
them aware about sexual health.
Proper Sexual health awareness among the adolescent population can help in personality
development as well since they will not decide anything depending on any guess, they will
decide depending on appropriate knowledge.
